The throat chakra is a point of energy at the base of the throat. Like all the chakras, you can’t see it with the naked eye, though some practitioners of chakra healing and similar disciplines say they can see the chakras as well as feel them with their hands. Rather than just a bright spot in a person’s aura or a “hot spot” of energy, think of the throat chakra as a swirling, active point of energy that runs from the front of the body through to the back. If it’s blocked or unbalanced, the body and mind functions associated with this point of bodily energy won’t work as well as they should.
The throat chakra is associated with the ability to verbally express oneself. This is the most basic definition given, but further study of it shows that it goes much deeper than just expressing oneself through words. The ability to be truthful springs from this chakra, as does the ability to take care of oneself, both in expression and action. Creativity and expression are affected by this chakra, along with things like tendency toward addiction, willfulness or lack of will, the ability to be authoritative, as well as negativity and criticism.
The sense and awareness of oneself also focus in this area. Physically, the throat chakra affects the throat and the surrounding areas including the glands like the thyroid glands, and dental health including the mouth and teeth. A sore throat, dental issues, glands that are tender and swollen and any problems with the voice like hoarseness or full-on laryngitis are associated with a blockage or unbalanced state of the throat chakra.
Gemstones like blue turquoise and other blue stones can help clear this chakra, because it associates with the color blue. But you can go further than waiting until there’s a problem and trying to correct it. You can make choices every day to promote a clear and healthy throat chakra.
Drinking a lot of water and healthy liquids are good for this area. Citrus fruits that are especially tart like lemons or grapefruits are good for this chakra, as are some fruits that grow on trees like pears, peaches and apples. Adding a little salt or lemon grass seasoning to your food can also help keep this chakra clear. Practicing overall good health and self-expression can also help keep this area of the body in balance.
