Birthdays and anniversaries became associated with certain gemstone meanings and varieties of stones because of the month they fall in. Someone born in October, for instance, has a birthstone of Tourmaline.  Someone born under the sign of Libra in that month may also be told that the gems associated with his or her sun sign include things like peridot, agate and a few other stones. Someone born under the Scorpio sun sign inherits rubies, garnets and yellow topaz. Other stones are associated with birth months in different cultures. While this is certainly a good starting point if you’re looking for a talisman or piece of jewelry, regardless of the month in which you were born, understanding gemstone meanings can help you choose the right gem for your health, too.

Using October as an example, the modern birthstone is tourmaline which is often thought of as green or pink, but the stone actually comes in a variety of colors. Someone who has high blood pressure, heart or circulatory problems, problems with expressing love or receiving it, might choose green or pink tourmaline instead of the other October choices because of the gemstone meanings.

Green and pink are the colors of the heart chakra, which is a vortex of energy in the center of the chest. Green and pink stones are related to this chakra because they have similar vibrations and can help clear and balance this chakra. So wearing or choosing a talisman of pink or green tourmaline, pink rose quartz or even jade, can help with these issues.
Within each month’s birthstone, planet, sun and ancient stone choices, it’s not difficult to find a stone that will both symbolize your birth month or sun sign as well as work with your body and your energy to reinforce the positive or ease away the negative parts of your health.

Someone born in August who is familiar with or looks up gemstone meanings might opt not to choose jewelry made from peridot, which is green, but might choose something like citrine, a yellow gem, instead. Citrine is associated with the sun sign of Virgo, and is also a good gem for bringing the solar plexus chakra into balance. Someone suffering with poor self-image, who feels powerless or indecisive, or who has energy problems, might benefit from carrying or wearing this stone.

Look beyond the traditional or modern birthstones and associations when choosing jewelry, talismans or stones to bring about healing. Find a good resource on gemstone meanings and choose those that can benefit you the most.
